Went to the Holston again yesterday putting in at JBD. Following rhotenj's advice I headed upstream to the dam area, trolling jerkbaits as I went. Caught 10-12 on the jerks, all longer than 14". They didn't seem any smaller up by the dam than down by Eastman. The largest of the day, 19", was within sight of the dam. I tried casting a spinner and drop-shotting nightcrawler pieces near the dam hoping for some dinks but got no bites on either. Any suggestions for smaller fish in that area? I was thinking of trying smaller jerkbaits as well as using a flyrod to toss some really light spinners and soft baits.

Almost forgot, try the trout magnets on an ultra-light or fly setup. I was suprised how well they worked. I've replaced the plastic bodies with Power bait honey worms with good success.

Thanks for the tip BF. If I can find some Trout Magnets around here I'll give them a try this week. The web site suggests fishing them under a float. Do you do that? The spinners I've used are 1/4 oz for casting distance. I have a couple 1/6 oz roostertails that didn't work on the SH I can try. How do you like to fish corn and other baits? I used to do pretty well on the SH with a drop shot rig which keeps the bait up off the bottom a little but it hasn't worked on the Holston for me.

Try rainbow powerbait on a c-rig, small hook.

Second the corn for small stockies.

Chart rooster tail works good too.

you can also catch stockies near the riding stables on the lake.

Wallyworld carries the trout magnets. I like to fish them on an ultralight rig w/2lb test. I just bounce them off the bottom.

I like about a no.6 baitholder hook for corn, use a split shot about a foot up your line for casting distance. Again, light line is an advantage. I have used powerbait the same way, but corn is cheaper.

I use small spinners by choice (1/8th ounce), but have caught trout on about any size.

I hope you can catch enough to make some happy largemouth, if not, there's a trout farm here in Elizabethton

there's a trout farm here in Elizabethton

Funny you should mention that. My daughters were summer staff at Doe River Gorge camp a couple years ago. I asked them to stop at the trout farm in Hampton and pick some up on the way home once. The owner gave them a bunch extra I think cuz they were young and good looking. That was a lot cheaper and less time consuming than catching them myself but not near as much fun. Same with minnows. Its just more satisfying to find em yourself. Plus you can't buy stonerollers but I can catch mass quantities and they work great.

Already found the Trout Mags at WM but haven't had a chance to try them yet. I chickened out on Friday cuz we were supposed to get 1.5 in of rain and high winds. What a mistake. This week might be tough with Nathan on spring break - he never wants to fish anymore.

Where's the trout farm in Elizabethton? I go to DRG frequently and would pick up some trout at Hampton but the guy who runs the farm is hardly ever there.

That's the only trout farm I know of, I was generalizing the area. I've had the same experience's there. Guys got a good business and won't hang around to run it. I've even called before I went and he still left before I got there.
Sorry I can't help any more than that.

Do they stock any creeks in your area? Most of the creek trout I've caught are much smaller than river trout. The TWRA usually starts stocking around this time each year.

Good luck with your search...
