Here is a idea for your lure retrever buy a retractable dog leash and tie your plug knocker to it that way you can hold it and your rod in the same hand and then you have one free hand to push yourself off of the bank or work the trolling motor.

Use a bass casting sinker the kind with the brass loop on it. Attach a snap or paperclip to the loop and when you get hung up just clip the sinker to your line, let it slid dpwn till it hits the plug shake it a couple of times and presto its free with both hands free to do whatever you need to do.

Not sure about holding everything in one hand but the part about attaching it to a retractable dog leash is a really good idea. I remember when I was growing up, we had ours tied to some nylon twine and kept the line wrapped around a stick. Every time we got hung up, guess who got to unwind it and then rewind it...
