There are no wake signs posted on the marina upstream of Calhoun's in Knoxville on the Tennessee River. I have seen plenty of marinas on the channel at other lakes where there is a buoy line or other defining structure that shows you where you can and cannot make a wake. The outer side = wake, the inside = no wake.

What do they mean at that marina on the TN River? There's no buoy line or anything to indicate where the zone is enforced. When we passed it last Sunday, I noticed the signs and just stayed towards the other side of the river.

Do they intend for folks to slow to idle for several hundred yards while passing the marina?

Or is it a proximity thing?

I'd imagine a barge throws a large wake, and I doubt they'd slow down.

I am thinking the no wake zone doesn't apply to river traffic, but rather to those in or near the slips...but thought I'd ask here to get other opinions.

Thanks!

From TWRA's website.

No Wake (Idle Speed) Areas

Unless otherwise marked, all vessels operating within 300 feet of a commercial boat dock must do so at a slow wake speed regardless of whether or not the area is marked by buoys.

"No wake" is defined as a vessel traveling at or below idle speed, or at such speed that the boat or its wake (waves) is not sufficient to cause possible injury or damage to other persons, boats, or property.

I think this is a good topic to be brought up. I for one, several years ago may have not been the best at obeying the no wake zones, but after having a boat on the dock, it's something everyone should do. Alot of people have alot of money invested tied up in marinas, and large wake can cause a variety of problems, and remember slowing down to half throttle with the bow of the boat sticking up in the air, is worse than running wide open.
