Hey guys, I hope you will give me your opinion on what you think is the best trolling motor battery for the money. I'm going to have to replace two trolling motor batteries shortly. I just don't trust them to hold up this spring. I don't seem to to get more than a year or so out of a battery. The batteries always stay on an automatic onboard charger and never allowed to sit uncharged. I hear stories about guys fishing for two days without a charge but I have never. I run a 71# Motor Guide 24v. only on a 19' Ranger.

I have had good luck with Interstste the only thing I don't like about them is you have to add water after about the 2 or 3 charge just rember to charge them back asap after fishing no matter what kind you get. oh BE SURE TO WEAR SAFTY GLASSES AND GLOVES DON'T TAKE NO CHANCES

I have tried several, and done well with many. I like Interstate a lot but my favorite has to be Deka. They just seem to last longer for me. I try to stay away from the wally world batteries. It seems like the only good thing about them is the ability to change them out when they leave you high and dry on the water.

Thanks for the replies guys...interesting that I looked at the wally world batteries this am and they are made by Exide as are the stowaways
do you think all the batteries are made by Johnson control and exide and just have different labels.

I actually have one of the Everstart Maxx batteries. Its a good battery, I havent had any issues with it really. Ive used it to run my 55lb thrust TM for 2 days of fishing and still had more juice left. Ive had it for 2 years now. I have heard however that people sometimes have issues with these batteries.

Supposedly Wal-Mart takes bids on who builds their batteries, just like their oil, although I don't know how often this occurs. I do know the batteries at the local walmart come off an exide truck but my walmart says they can't order any other exide battery for you. I've got mixed feelings about the wal-mart battery, decent for the dollar and an easy exchange when they go bad. But, there are definatley better batteries available. If any of you all like the optima batteries, check out the exide orbital, its the same design as the optima, but a little bit cheaper. I've not used them in my bass boat, but have been using 8 of them to power a 2000watt inverter, and they've held up really well.

There's only 3 or 4 battery makers and they have several different names for there batteries. I have used several and I like the sealed Deka, you don't never add water and they will troll me for 2 days on 60% power ( 60 on trolling motor), in a 20ft stratos, Min Kotta Maxium 80lb, 24 volt.... 2 days on 1 charge best I have ever gotten...

You would probably be crazy to take advice from someone you don't know but I will offer anyway.

Optima: great advertising

Wal-mart: great replacement policy, and you will probably need it

Good batteries for trolling motors: Deka and Trojan

AGM and Gell cell: excellent life and quicker recharge but require a so called" smart charger".

It sounds like you may have a problem with your onboard charger. Some onboard chargers will not fully charge a battery which will severly reduce the life of your batteries. After a while these batteries will no longer take a full charge, only what they are "trained" to take. You should be getting more than a year from even a Wal-mart battery. If you want to discuss in more detail e-mail me at [email protected]t lines.....Al

I've been using the bass pro shop deep cycle 185 battery for my trolling motor with no problems. I payed around 120 for it 2.5 years ago. I can troll for 2 8 to 10 hr days on one charge.

As Al mentioned, I wonder if the charger has anything to do with the battery condition. Normally, I charge with an onboard Promariner that puts out 20 amps total (I'm have three batteries hooked to it) I have a charger "off board" Smart Charger that puts out 20 amps to each battery that I could use. What and how do you guys charge batteries.

Depends on the charger. I have a Guest 3 bank. I can leave them hooked up all the time if I choose to. After a complete charge, the charger kicks into TRICKLE charge.

I used Interstate for 15+ years 2 sets darn good batts. , but the last 2 sets of interstates I have had were the worst batt's I've ever had.(JUNK) I bought a set of bass pro XPS 185 2 years ago & they have already outlasted the last 2 sets of Interstates.

I have to agree with charger. I have used about everything in my years of fishing and now i am using Interstate battries and love them, have had no problems and i stay on the trolling motor most trips 10 to 11 hrs and it only takes about 11/2 hrs to charge back up. I use a Minnkota Maxium 80. Good battries.
