Has anybody been to the river this year? I got one report that the smallies were not biting yet, or they are down in the French Broad.

They usually wont be in the lil pigeon until early spring, best smallie fishin ever......
I second that...

When it's time for the SM Spawn... It's time for the Little Pigeon.

Most of the SM are in the French Broad right now...

My Brother Jeff fishes the Little Pigeon about every year. I havn't fished it yet. He went last spring and I wasn't able to go. He said the water was about dried up and he didn't have much luck.

The summer was definitely tough because of all the drought Jig... the spring was pretty good for me though.
My earliest good bite starts in early to mid march. Oddly enough though its up higher in the river. I have caught smallies in every month of the year. And had almost sping like days in January and Febuary. Targer deeper holes, use hair jigs and move a little slower. Had one of the biggest smallmouth Ive ever seen up there follow a hair jig up out of a deep rocky hole onto a sand bar right in front of me once in December ( he didnt take it). I catch the majority of my big fish in march before they start getting hammered. But the numbers really pick up April through June my biggest ever up there coming in June.

I often thought that they moved up the L.Pigeon in the early spring to spawn then slowly go back to the Broad for the summer. I'm sure there are some that spend there entire life in the L.Pigeon but I think the majority go back to the Broad. Thanks for the replys
