I will be taking a trip with my wife and son and the IN LAWS in july to the grand disney world!! (YAY ME!!) Well I might be able to slip a travel rod on the plane and some baits with me and slip away to do a little fishing!! ...so are there a lot of public places to fish in florida? like lakes, canals, etc...I would like to catch a big bass and wouldn't mind catching a snake head if I could find some...any tips you guys can give me I appreciate!!

Thanks,

Coty

You wont catch any snake heads in Orlando. You have to go to south Florida for that. There are plenty of public places to fish. After all, We are called the sportfishing capital of the world. Are you staying in Orlando?

There's some decent inshore saltwater action if you drive out towards New Smyrna or Canaveral area, only about 40 minutes east on the tollway. Find some bridges with decent bank access and study a tide chart. Get a bucket of live shrimp, greenbacks(castnet required for that one), or live pinfish(aerator needed for all three, especially the greenbacks). If you can only get frozen shrimp, the get some #12 hooks for catching pinfish. You can also do pretty good with Zara Spooks and DOA shrimp, but live bait is your ticket to some good ones, and a variety of them. The reason why I suggest saltwater is that most central Florida lakes have extremely limited bank access, and the accessible spots are usually heavily overfished. All you need for tackle on live bait is some 30 or 40lb flourocarbon leader material and some 1/0 or 2/0 kahle hooks. Make your leaders at least 2 1/2 feet long, and connect to your mainline with a blood knot...If you are really wanting to do some freshwater fishing, I highly recommend Hillsborough River State Park, about 40 minutes from there towards Tampa on the 4, off of US 301. The canoe rental rates are better than reasonable, and its loaded with nice Largemouth and big 'ol Bowfin(waaay meaner than a snakehead!!!). Most bait shops in the area have live shiners, and the bigger the better. You can see all the way down to the bottom in most areas of the upper end, and you're in there with the gators and everything. Its pretty awesome.
