Default TWRA public meeting Knoxvlle

I went to a public meeting last night with TWRA in Knoxville concerning smallmouth limits on Cherokee, Douglas, Ft. Loudoun and Watts Bar. Some concerned tournament fishermen are wanting to move the 18" limits back to 15 inches. The concerned anglers say they can't catch 18 inch fish and that they are tired of having to throw back 17-3/4 fish.

I voiced my opinions on the merits of the 18 inch size limit and the general threats to the Tennessee smallmouth species. The sound scientific reasoning's for keeping an upper tier limit fell on deaf ears. Keeping a strong number of smallmouth in the reservoir system benefits all who fish in Tennessee waters. Not just a few who what to instantly reap the rewards from the sacrifices of the fishing community.

If I catch a SM I think I am lucky I do not fish for them. But are you implying that after voicing your opinion that the current size limit is going to change. Just curious.

I just don't know. There are several more meetings and a commission meeting coming up in October in Greenville. We will just have to wait and see how things come out. I for one would like to see the size limit stay at 18. From all that I have seen it is better for the fish and will ensure smallmouth down the road.

I agree. But I wish the limit would be the same statewide not just on selected lakes.

There are several reasons why it is not. Douglas is just beginning to turn out some good fish. Numbers are coming up, it will just take some time. The numbers are somewhat down on nickajack and Chicamauga. Hopefully they will turn around in time. People are also asking for strickter limits on Dale Hollow.
