I was inspecting my gear after todays trip, and noticed that the tip eye's glass lining in missing. Is there a way to get this repaired somehow without buying a new rod? Is there somewhere in the East TN area that could do this for me?
Replacing the tips is very easy. I've had a couple of rods that got the tip broke or cracked. I used some heat to get the old guide off and when you buy a new tip, the package should come with a few diffrent size guides and a glue stick, you heat the glue stick with a lighter (basically like hot glue) and smear it on the tip of the rod. then place the guide on there and use the heat of the lighter to adjust the new guide to make sure it's straight. Let it set for a little while to completely cool off and so that the glue can harden. Then you'll be all set and ready to hit the water again. I've actually got a spinning rod that the tip broke Many years ago and I fixed it myself and still use it to this day!
I just use needle nose plires and a match heat the tip a few seconds and continue to hold the flame under the tip and put the plires on the tip and gently pull.....should take less than 10 seconds for it to come off under light pressure.
Replacing the tip. Clean the excess off the rod with a rag while it is still warm.
Select the tip that has the tighest fit. Put it on and line it up with the other eyes on the rod. I make a mark (magic marker or sharpie) on the rod and the tip to line up with when I put the tip back on. After marking the tip and rod remove the tip.
Heat the glue with a match or lighter and rub the glue on the tip of the rod. It dont take to much glue if it is a tight fit. If you do get to much glue you can take it off later after it cools
Immediately put the tip on and line up the marks. (make sure the tip is all the way down on the rod as far as it will go). If it lines up great .... if not use the match and heat the tip and line it up by turning it. Let cool remove any excess glue it normally will chip right off. If it dont just wave a match under it and wipe it immediately with a paper towel or rag.
Really its not hard to do at all. After you get one under your belt you will be looking for the next chance to do another....
Thanks for all of the help guys!! Sorry to bug you with noobish questions...LOL Im going to go see if I can find a Fuji tip to put on this rod later this week. Ill let you know how it goes.
