To lazy to look up the rules but I have heard it is illegal to fish with bait (blue gill) caught and then used as bait for larger fish. Just wondering if that is true.

It is not true. According to page 14 of this year's fishing guide = an angler may use legally harvested sunfish as bait as long as the creel / length limits are met for said sunfish.

Thanks for the info! Not sure if blue gill are a good striper bait, but we were planning on night fishing this weekend to avoid crazy boat traffic, and I thought maybe some sun fish would draw a strike.

I'd give it a try i saw a guy using bluegill below MH dam last sat and he caught 2 stripers that i saw.Of course shad would also do well
