Took my son and went night fishing Wednesday night for the first time in probably 20 yrs. Never fished any of the lakes here for crappie, but did a few times up on Lake Cumberland in Ky years ago.

We went up to Big Sycamore Creek. Know we were in the right area as there were 6 other boats set up there that night. We set up the two lights - bought a couple of the 9" submersible green lights from Bass Pro - and before long we had tons of baitfish around the boat. Had a small "river" of fish circling around the lights in a large oval that took them under the boat on the back side of the lights.

Didn't catch much all night though. About a half dozen 8" crappie, 1 keeper crappie, a couple 6-7" stripes, and a 2 Saw plenty of fish around 10-12 feet deep (we were sitting in about 30' of water along the creek channel). Larger baitfish (shad??) occasionally busted up through the smaller minnows and once in a while a stripe would take a charge through the mass. Figured we would start picking up fish when that got started, but they remained few and far between all night.

Don't know if we were doing something wrong or if it just wasn't a great night for fishing. We weren't close enough to others to really tell if they were catching much or not.

Had our lights about 2' deep. We were using smalll minnows - what the bait store said people were using for crappie. Just tightlined them below the boat 8-10' deep. Even tried jigging a Little Cleo and a smaller Kastmaster hoping to maybe get some white bass, but had no luck at all with that.

So was it just a poor night for night fishing or do we need to do something different? Lights lower? Different size minnow? Use slip bobbers and keep changing depth until we get better action? Just not in the right spot?

We stayed until almost 3:30am - a good while after all the other boats had left. Don't know if they left due to limiting or just gave up. Most all left by the time the moon came up. Will the fish continue hitting most all night or does the moonrise shut them down?

Going to try it again tonight in a little different spot that looks promising on the topo map - if we can get there before someone else. My son enjoyed the outing anyway, as did I, but a little more action would have made it that much better.

Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

when we used to night fish we would dip up the bait that came to the lights. "match the hatch". those other boats may be over brush piles, we always fished deep brush at night 20'-25'
