There are certain times I prefer artificial lures over using live bait when crappie fishing.

If the water is stained or has alot of color to it, I do better on things like small grubs or tube baits. (black with chartreuse is my favorite color)

If I am trolling for crappie..hand down its a small crankbait like the #5 shad rap or a small Cordell rattle trap.

If I am crappie fishing in very clear water..I prefer a live minnow. Small minnow on a #6 hook with a tiny splitshot sinker. (just enough weight to sink the minnow but be can still swim freely.

What does everyone else like?

I'm like you. It always depends on the time of the year, how i'm going to fish etc. Just can't go ONLY one way or pick a favorite.

Crappie? What is this mythical Crappie creature of which you refer to?

Never heard of it, don't believe that it exists. https://www.easttennesseefishing.com/...t/rolleyes.gif

For me, nothing beats vertical jigging a small crappie tube jig. Feeling that thump or weight on the end is just the best. I prefer a solid body tube on a minnow head and I like the jig to be red/chart. tail or black/chart. tail. There are times when sling shotting a small black/chart. tail grub under docks can be a killer technique on Loudon or Watts Bar. I've not figured the crappie out since I moved to Johnson City and have been fishing Boone. The water seems too clear to vertical jig in my experience but that doesn't keep me from trying from time to time. I'm hungry for crappie and see posts of slaying them on a simple bobber and minnow set up so I'm planning on taking my son to the lake Saturday to try it out. If it works, I may become a convert to bait. At least for a day.

im artificial all the way...not gonna spend the money on minners when i have fake ones that will catch them..in fact i think sometimes i can catch more on artificials than people catch on live bait...i use a array of lures from a plain ole 2in chart grub to the lil 2in panfish assasins and i use a 2in Fin-S fish under a bobber.depends on what type of structure im fishing if i use a bobber or if im tightlining...alot of it has to do with how deep it is also..i catch alot of crappie very deep..deeper than most people care to fish..somewere around 20-30 ft..so when ur fishing that deep its artificial all the way!!!

For fishing shallow brush i like a minnow on a 1/32 oz white fly with a float. If deeper like a 2 inch white or chartreuse twister grub on a weedless 1/16 oz jighead using 4 lb test.
